I feel the same way, I was really looking forward to this movie. I knew something was off about the ending, it just felt like there should be more...

Hopefully they will correct this mistake if they decided to air it again or other Studio Ghibli movies. They could have a least given it 2 1/2 hour slot if it would have helped, like YTV does during Zapx

I saw the movie back in 2001 and was really looking forward to watching it yesterday, tho i forgot about it, but since it was edited im glad i missed it so i can just rent the dvd. :/

Though Im still glad that they aired it, just wish it wasnt cut up so much.

Um, that "no edits" thing is in the contract between Ghibli and Disney for the translation of their work. The CBC isn't bound by that. So, no lawsuit.

Also, much as I hate the whole compressed-credits thing, just most broadcasters do it (or something like it) for everything. It deserves to be complained about, but it's not any more heinous because it happened to Spirited Away.

So it wasn't just my imagination after all.

The only real cuts I noticed (granted, this is my first viewing of the movie) was when Chihiro asked Yubaba for a job (I noticed a cut and a sudden change in the music), and how the movie's "ending" didn't provide much closure (if at all), meaning that there was most likely still some footage left.

To have my first viewing of this great movie edited makes me feel disappointed. Perhaps I should send CBC a message, too.

Yikes! The showing is not even over here in B.C, and i was about to report the disaster of the cut scenes, first the 'stink spirits' bath scene, and just a moment ago, Chihiro's force feeding of medicine and squishing of the curse-blob.

Even though i own this movie, I am very disillusioned that CBC did this, if they wish to 'showcase' works of art, don't slice it to bits! Its as bad as cutting off VanGoh's OTHER ear and calling it his original works.

I am going to have to send CBC another message, this time NOT praising them...

"Dear CBC, I am very disappointed in your editing of Miyazaki's 'Spirited Away'.

While I understand your need for programming time, by taking this fabulous work and editing scenes essential and whimsical of the film, you have ruined it. Not just for me, but the many new and old fans to Japanese Animation.

If CBC want to keep its image of bringing fantastic and original programming to its viewers, it should at least comply with keeping the art in its originality.

You have just cut off the OTHER ear of VanGoh's art and resold it under his name. Shameful.

Give them a call if you can! It's much more effective, just as long as you request to talk to viewer relations. As I said in the other thread, it would be nice to know that I'm not the first person calling about this whenever I get a hold of them tomorrow.

We should still be positive, though. As big of a disaster as this has been, the outcome should still be, at the very least, the film getting an uncut (and heavily promoted!) airing later on this year.

If you caught CBC's anticipated airing of Spirited Away earlier today, you may have noticed that it was completely massacred. While no edits were made for content, nearly thirty minutes of material were completely cut out to fit it down into its ridiculously short two hour time slot - including the final three minutes of the film! Not to mention that ads were run over the film's credits. What's more, CBC ran absolutely no notification that the film would be edited for time.

I guess CBC isn't aware of Studio Ghibli's "no edits" policy, and that they may get slapped with a lawsuit for this. But regardless, it was inexcusable to edit such a highly acclaimed film to this extent. You may want to take the time to inform them of this fact.

Although if you want any kind of positive outcome from this, I recommend avoiding a typical "angry anime fan" type of reaction, and simply insist that they should be obligated to re-air the film (and hopefully other Studio Ghibli films) completely unedited.
