I'll ask James and get back

I'll ask James and get back to you. He can probably tell me which store line, if anything. Although knowing Bandai, it's probably in hobby stories at the moment... you can probably ask a local hobby store to order some in. Comic shops, or anime stores, might be able to order too.

I've seen them at my local comic shop (Cosmix). I think Capitaine Quebec and "Le Temple De La Renommé" also has them. Basically comic book and trading card shops all over Montreal. :P

Bandai America,

Bandai America, unfortunately, seems to have their foot as a primary target.

I've dealt with BAI in the past (their ccg division, but still part of the same company), and foot-shooting was rather common then...

I think their marketing and management team needs to re-think some of their strategies, and focus more on future potential than immediate potential. Widen their scope, you know.

I believe if you sign up for the HD packages on ExpressVu then all the HD channels are previewed free for three months, but I don't know if that applies to the movie channels. I do know that if you sign up for The Movie Network it also includes the HD channels free.

Yeah, the primary complaint

Yeah, the primary complaint is that Bandai sold the television rights to Starz Media to gain increased exposure on US television through Sci-Fi, but completely neglected the toll on the Canadian market. The way I see it: less exposure on TV, less demand for DVDs, home video releases become a hell of a lot harder to find. The way that Bandai has so cautiously shot themselves directly in the foot suggests that they really, truly don't care.

I believe much of the concern here is not in regards to Gurren Lagann, but rather the possibility that the same thing will happen to Gundam 00. Of course, most of the people worried about Gundam 00 are those who still have hope that Bionix will stop being a Viz infomercial.

EmperorFred wrote:
The way I understand it, the anime will be airing on Super Channel 2, and while Super Channel HD 1 is the same as regular Super Channel 1, Super Channel HD 2 is not the same as regular Super Channel 2.

...So there's no guarantee you'll be seeing it on the HD channel preview.

My Shaw box is showing the anime programming listed on SCHD2, so I'm under the assumption that it will be simulcasted. The listings could be wrong, but I'd prefer not to expect that possibility from a service with such a high subscription fee.

I think there's more blame here aimed at the suppliers of the show, though, rather than at the recipients. I don't get the sense there's a hate-on for SuperChannel, just a resentment of its expense and obscurity compared to the widely available YTV.

It's interesting, one of the main things that Skiffy viewers down south have been complaining about with regard to its run of Gurren Lagann is the timing of the commercial breaks. With SuperChannel, at least Canuck viewers don't have to suffer that particular compromise ....

All right... I'm going to

All right... I'm going to just go ahead and go against popular opinion here, as the negativity of this news item has been getting under my skin for a while.

The overall theme around here seems to be that Super Channel's airing of Gurren Lagann is preventing it from airing on YTV, or that we should somehow be entitled to the show airing on basic cable.

Now, I don't consider myself such a crusader for anime that I will always call for a series to run on a "mainstream" channel like YTV, just because more people will have the opportunity to see it and therefore "further the advancement of anime" or some such ideal that has long since had its moment.

I'm not a TV programmer, I'm just a viewer. As a viewer, I don't have the power to decide what a particular channel does and does not decide to pick up. I do however have the power as a viewer to reward channels that run the programming that I like - the way that I like - with my ratings points (if possible), and more directly, my subscription dollars.

Yes, I'm going to subscribe to Super Channel and watch their anime for as long as they have it. Sure, if a show were on YTV more people would be able to watch it, it would presumably be more popular, but you know, I don't really care. I hate YTV's broadcasts of anime. I hate their inconsistent edits, I hate their many commercial breaks, I hate their pop-up graphics, I hate their shrunken credits. Anime on a premium cable network sounds like a good deal to me.

A selfish attitude? Perhaps. But frankly, YTV has made its choices. I'm just thankful that an anime series is shown on Canadian TV at all - even though it may air on basic cable in the US. Screw YTV, and if airing anime is Super Channel's way of drawing new subscribers, consider me drawn.

Nope ... and the competition posed by SuperChannel starting up is likely one the main reasons that MovieCentral and The Movie Network (which don't have the same owners as each other, but work together closely) each rebranded one of their channels recently as 'HBO Canada.' The battle is picking up.

I'm not sure why StarChoice would force viewers to pick sides, given they'd make more money by selling both packs to the same households ....

SuperChannel is a direct competitor to The Movie Network (in eastern Canada) and MovieCentral (in western Canada), charging roughly the same subscriber fees. If you want 'em all packaged together, you'll certainly pay dearly for that package.

I'm not sure about other providers but StarChoice at one point was offering Superchannel only if you gave up TMN.

In other words it's one or the other.

This may have changed since the last time (a month or so ago) I looked into it but I found that very interesting and a prime reason why I wouldn't get Superchannel.

New anime on Super Channel in December (no, this isn't good news)

It looks like Super Channel 2 will be making some controversial additions to its (probably brokered) Manga Entertainment-fueled anime block beginning Monday, December 8. According to their schedule:

November 24 at 9:00PM (EST) - Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
December 1 at 9:00PM (EST) - Vampire Wars
December 1 at 10:00PM (EST) - Psychic Wars
December 8 at 9:00PM (EST) - Two episodes of Gurren Lagann
December 8 at 10:00PM (EST) - Now and Then, Here and Now
December 8 at 10:30PM (EST) - Descendants of Darkness

Does this mean Bandai Entertainment sold the Canadian rights to both Gurren Lagann (and in all likelihood Gundam 00) to Manga Entertainment? If so, we can safely place a considerable amount of blame on Bandai for the massive decline of anime on stations people actually get (ie: YTV).

Not only is Super Channel a premium station, but most subscribers aren't even allowed to pay for the service directly. Thanks to the inability for competition between premium stations, you'll need to pay for Super Channel on top of Movie Central or TMC. If you have digital cable through either Shaw or Rogers, Super Channel is offering a free preview of its HD channels throughout December. Anyone without HD is out of luck.

Thank you to doconnor for pointing out this travesty.
