Here's a bit of interesting

Here's a bit of interesting news concerning One Piece

Quote:
The North American anime distributor Funimation has announced at 1:00 p.m. EDT that it will relaunch its online streaming of the One Piece anime series on Saturday, August 29 with episode 415.

Full story here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-08-18/funimation-to-relaunch-one-piece-streams-on-saturday

So I'm guessing that Toei's rage has finally subsided or that they are happy with the changes Funi made. In any case, it will be good to see One Piece back in another week.

The newest file is the FMA:B

The newest file is the FMA:B 9 episode that was up last week. It may take them a little while to catch up.

Somehow I don't think we'll see One Piece back for a while, if ever. The problem is that only those who have been downloading it illegally are likely to take much serious interest. I haven't watched it since they dropped it from TV. I admit I'm curious about it, but I just don't have time to go back and watch all the episodes I've missed. And there's no guarantee of an ending anytime soon, if at all.

Chances are we'll see a short tryout of One Piece but if they don't get enough downloads they'll pull it.

They didn't discover their

They didn't discover their problem until the release because the release was so popular they couldn't ignore it. What likely happened is that either one of their employees ran across it or someone informed them of it. It's only then that they realized they had a security problem.

The video portal is still down, although it's only Monday morning. If it's not back up by Friday then it might never come back. Meanwhile, FMA:B 10 has already been fansubbed and released.

Here's an interesting read

Here's an interesting read over on ANN

Quote:
FUNimation Entertainment has had a bad month and half. First they accidentally preempted the Japanese broadcast of Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ episode 4, then episode 403 of One Piece was leaked onto the Internet, again ahead of the Japanese broadcast, and finally the latest episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was leaked, but at least not until after the Japanese broadcast.

Funimation has since been heavily criticized by the online anime community, in ANN's forums and elsewhere, even by sympathetic individuals, for virtually non-existent security.

Funimation CEO Gen Fukunaga spoke with us today regarding the leaked episodes, what Funimation is doing to fix the problem, and how the problem affects the future of online streaming anime.

Full story here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2009-06-05/funimation-discusses-leaked-episodes

Of course it's mostly the normal corporate bs about "fansubs are bad" and all the usual stuff but the one interesting note in there is that it seems they were not even aware of phantom episodes being leaked until very recently. Kinda surprising given how they usually are able to go after the fansubbing groups who release their licensed stuff right away.

I wouldn't say it's the only reason, however if there was a problem with Japan they may have had to take it down until legal issues could be settled.

Also remember that while it's been down for about three or four days, most of that time has been the weekend and they may simply have been leaving it down until they get back to working on it.

Keep in mind that the only reason FUNi has taken the vids down may be because they've been found in breach of contract with the Japanese licensor.

Bravo Funimation - All

Bravo Funimation - All you're doing is pushing those who may have used fansubs in the past to watch FMA but switched over to your stream and now by taking it down they're going back to the fansubs in order to watch FMA.

Plus, I wouldn't be

Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more attempts by others to compromise FUNimation's service once again, despite extra security measures.

At least they're not going to upload a new episode until it's actually supposed to be up, which is what they should've done in the beginning.

They were back streaming

They were back streaming FMA:B 9 on Wednesday but the entire site was taken down sometime after that. The article was posted on Friday but it could have been conducted on Wednesday or Thursday.

It's likely that they will stream again, if they can. But they could have overstepped their contracts by streaming in the first place. So it could be a while before they come back up if there's legal matters to work out. It's not the technical issues that would stop them, it's the legal.

Patrick: ANN's interview

Patrick: ANN's interview with Gen Fukunaga implies they will be streaming again. And that they are going to a lot of lengths to make sure these things don't happen again.

Right now Funimation's video

Right now Funimation's video portal is "down for maintenance." I suspect they're still working on the security.

Edit: It's been down for at least 11 hours so far, probably longer.

Another Edit: It's still down about a day later. I expect it will stay down for the weekend. It's hard to say at this point if they'll be streaming anything again.

I just noticed that on ANN.

I just noticed that on ANN. So it's good to hear that they'll continue. Pulling the plug on such a project now would just encourage the illegal subs.

It still could be some time before One Piece returns. It sounds as if Toei may have had a tantrum over the issue.

It seems Funimation are

It seems Funimation are quickly making changes to their security if this posting on ANN today is accurate:

Quote:
The North American anime distributor Funimation has confirmed that it will reactivate the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime series on its Funimation.com website after implementing additional "security for all videos" on the site on Monday.

Full story here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-06-02/funimation.com-to-repost-fullmetal-alchemist-after-fixes

At least it's a quick turn around though I don't know if this means we'll be getting another shot at seeing One Piece or not.

The crazy thing about

The crazy thing about Funimation's lack of security is that it makes it possible not just to watch the episodes but to download them as well (with a little technical knowledge and the right but easily attainable software). Since Funimation is in the business of selling DVDs it seems rediculous that they would make it so easy for people just to take the shows for free. They seem to forget that most of the people into watching anime online are computer savvy.
