Nick Canada is now on the horizon

Pep's picture

Starting November 2, Canada will lose its long-held designation as one of the few countries in the entire world without its own version of Nickelodeon, as Corus has announced that Nickelodeon Canada is set to launch on that date. The station will feature new titles including Fanboy and Chum Chum and The Troop, older Nick titles including The Mighty B!, Danny Phantom and Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as some Canadian shows. The masses should also hope that this development will result in the return of Invader Zim, which is something Corus would likely be reluctant to make note of.

If nothing else, this announcement may come as reassurance to those convinced that YTV itself would become "Nickelodeon Canada" in the imminent future. Thanks to bosstard for the tip.

Good News: YTV won't be

Good News: YTV won't be rebranded.

Bad News: YTV will be probably littered with 5 hour "Nick Canada" preview blocks daily.

Maybe this will allow YTV to

Maybe this will allow YTV to start airing more anime again.

Well, the article stated

Well, the article stated that the new channel will give more exposure to the Nick stuff, not that it will be relocated from YTV. So I'll have to agree with Primus on this one.

Based upon the way YTV seems

Based upon the way YTV seems to be headed, I think what we could see is YTV getting away from cartoons in the afternoon and evenings and using that time for movies and live-action shows. They would leave the cartoons to Nick. Of course they would still want to run cartoons on Saturday mornings and afternoons.

It's also likely that based upon the way specialty channels have been implemented, Nick would be a specialty channel that one would have to pay extra for. YTV is currently a "must carry" channel. New shows would run first on Nick, then on YTV. So if someone wants to see the show first they have to subscribe to the pay service. Sort of like how Stargate:Atlantis aired on TMN before airing on the broadcast channels.

It seems likely that YTV had plans to bring Nick to Canada for some time now, otherwise they wouldn't be starting in a little more than a month. It could also explain the recent shift in weekend evenings away from anime.

While this announcement

While this announcement let's me exhale a bit. The Y would be nuts to get rid of their " Nick Trifecta" (Spongebob, Oddparents, iCarly). It would be like CBC getting rid of Hockey Night in Canada.

Now Thedormin has a point in saying this might get some anime back on the Y. However what I can foresee is that YTV becomes Canada's version of TeenNICK (shudders)

So Degrassi, Instant Star,

So Degrassi, Instant Star, and other CTV co-productions all aboard! YAY!

November 1st's Nickelodeon

November 1st's Nickelodeon Sunday block will be replaced by "Sample Nickelodeon," which is essentially a 7:00am-2:00pm block of all the shows which will air on Nickelodeon Canada. This is the only time you'll ever be able to watch "Fanboy and Chum Chum" outside Nickelodeon Canada.

Well, it's finally happened.

Well, it's finally happened. Naruto and Bleach, after lingering in reruns for the past few months, have finally been removed from YTV's schedule, presumably for good. While the coffin has indeed been...Top Casinos
