New Inuyasha streams PROBABLY not available in Canada

Pep's picture

In announcing their digital release strategy for the long-awaited Inuyasha: The Final Chapter, set to debut this coming Saturday, Viz has revealed that they will likely be making an extensive effort to ensure that their online streams remain untainted by Canadian eyes. Despite the fact that Viz holds the rights to the series for Canada as well as the US, it will be made available solely through All-American online streaming website Hulu.com, meaning that the conclusion of Inuyasha will not be legally accessible by Canadians.

While the streams can also be found at shonensunday.com, it is very likely that they will be nothing more than mirrors of Hulu.com. Should this indeed prove to be the case, enthusiasts may be advised to vent their frustrations directly to Viz, and remind them which country's Google searches were dominated by Inuyasha back when the series was at its height.

I have to wonder if Viz

I have to wonder if Viz might have a deal with YTV or something in the can already and thus why it seems that Canadian fans are getting the short end of the stick. Though by that thinking one would expect the announcement to come right away along with the other news.

Any possibility that Viz is miffed at YTV over the handling of Naruto and Bleach and/or other Viz titles?

Viz don't care about Canada.

Viz don't care about Canada. Viz don't care about anime. Viz just cares about manga...

...isn't the thing DUBBED up

...isn't the thing DUBBED up here? Then, doesn't that make it terribly unfair of 'em to deny us the viewing of what, by our standards, may very well count somewhat as a Canadian program? And, worse yet, they're making it EXCLUSIVE to Americans?

That's just not nice.

well, it might not be all

well, it might not be all doom and gloom since there's now a preview on the shonensunday site and it's working for me (i'm in Ontario) so perhaps this could mean that the evil taint of hulu does not reach it.

The original InuYasha was

The original InuYasha was produced starting in 2000. Canada started airing episodes in 2003. So it was about 3 years for us to get the dubbed episodes. By that standard it would take until 2012 before we saw the dubbed episodes on YTV.

Back then there just weren't as many people aware of the anime and it wasn't as easily available as it is today. It was a few years old but we didn't realize that. Even with an increased pace we won't see the new InuYasha episodes dubbed until next year, meaning that YTV wouldn't be airing them until next fall at the earliest.

Nowadays, chances are if a show is any good it's been watched on the Internet first. And so fans aren't as interested in watching it on TV. I think Death Note suffered from that, even though that appeared very quickly in dubbed form on YTV after it's Japan release. Since many had already seen the episodes fansubbed they had no interest in watching them again. (Although with Death Note the ending does tend to put off subsequent viewings. Once one knows how it ends they're not as interested in re-watching it.)

Not a swell idea to compare

Not a swell idea to compare dubbing practises back in the day to current day dubbing practises.

I was referring more to

I was referring more to YTV's broadcasting practice, if not the general treatment of anime on TV. Networks don't have the lead time they one had, so they're a little more hesitant about shows that are more than a year old.

A few people have told me

A few people have told me that viz messed up and the streams didn't have any English subs last night during the first episode's airing. Anyone here watch it last night and can confirm this?

It's Hulu so I couldn't

It's Hulu so I couldn't watch it there. I do remember reading though that there were no subs.

Legal or not you can still

Legal or not you can still watch it in Canada so eff it.

Yes, for a while there were

Yes, for a while there were no subtitles on the video. It was a glitch on Hulu, they admitted it.

Later on last night the subtitles came on.

I don't know why but I almost assumed there were no subs planned, I don't remember Viz ever saying anything to that effect.

I'm glad, for some reason they think I have a US IP address.

It is possible to get

It is possible to get programs that will spoof a US IP, although I don't feel comfortable running them.

I believe VIZ licensed the new series before the first new episode aired so I don't think it will be long before we see subs. The question will be in whether they'll air on TV. Even though YTV has effectively dropped Bionix, they could still air the episodes on their own. However, given their current model, it's unlikely they'll get on during prime time.
