Talkback - Basilisk

Well, since you guys noticed that Razer (yes, Razer...the little network that could) has been finally struck a deal with FUNi. Go to this thread

So, I'll make this short and sweet, here are the description from Razer:

Quote:
The year is 1614 AD

Two warring ninja clans, each supporting a son of Hidetada Tokugawa as the next shogun, send ten representatives each to fight to the death for the possession of a scroll. The prize: the annihilation of the other and the staunch support of the Tokugawa government for the winning clan for the next thousand years.

If you guys have digital cable or satellite and have Razer on your system, I suggest you order it.....NOW! :D

Episode 1- Destiny

I watched the first episode.

Wow, no wonder some people call it "the Naruto for adults." Even in the first scene with the hawk & the snake, blood was flying everywhere! It definitely also has a more mature feeling than Naruto does. Oboro is also very pretty and well-drawn IMO.

I'm liking this series already. :)

Gee, only one person replied to these exclusive series...shameful. Just kidding.

Anyways, going back to the other thread regarding the whole uncut versions with a PG rating, Razer didn't even have a disclaimer on the content they've showed which is also surprising to me.

So far so good with the english dub version of this series, and I can't wait to see another episode tomorrow night. Even though I've watched the first 2 episode on subtitles last year.

Episode 2- Last Rendezvous

I just want to make sure of something.

In the 1st ep, when that young couple ended up fighting each other, was that really the 2 old people that lead the 2 clans? :?

As for Ep. 2, I liked it. The fat guy (forgot his name ATM) was pretty amusing.

But with the No Hostility Pact broken, I don't think that Gennosuke & Oboro will get married.

    Bell ExpressVu - channel - 577
    Cogeco Cable - channel - 172
    MTS - channel 324
    Rogers Cable - channel - 706
    Telus - channel 254

Well, they used to have showing Manga Entertainment titles on IFC (Canada, not US), but that's long gone.
Oh, if you haven't notice, IFC showed these following titles in the past 2 1/2 months:

Ninja Scroll
Blood: The Last Vampire
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Knockin' On Heaven's Door)
Ghost in the Shell (The first movie)
Memories
and Macross Plus OVA.

On with the topic.

Episode 3- The Onslaught of War

Well, since I'll be going away next week and so, I won't be able to make the next episode posts here and the other 2 threads (Trinity Blood and Samurai 7). So guys, anyone interested and has Razer, feel free to make up the next posts in the coming weeks. Otherwise, just leave it afterwards. It's up to you guys...or not. Later.

I could do it. =\ Although I think that posting the title of the next ep isn't really all that necessary.

BTW, Anybody able to answer my question in my last post?

Yes, yes it was (i saw the episode thrice and payed attention the 2nd and 3rd)

I found the way they cut the comercials when first I saw it rather comical. The end lead right into the credits. I found the whole dramitic dual deaths followed immidatly by the words "distrubuted by: Funimation Inc." rather ironic. IMO (not that it's important but...) FUNi really needs to change its name.

I'm thinking that Bandai is a play on Banzai. I know that Geneon does have some meaning that was brought up during the big name change all those years back, can't for the life of me remember though. No clue about Viz, Video Wizard perhaps?

Haha wow, I couldnt think of anything xD

I just saw the first 2 eps of Basilisk today and Im.. really confused >.> Can someone please post here and explain some stuff before 5:00 (est)? From what I understand, there are 2 clans that are fighting, and they both have to choose 10 Ninja from each side to battle. The old people (forgot their names.. Ogane and Denjou I think?) were in love but for some reason she thought that he decieved him? And then they started fighting again, and at the end of the episode killed each other.. so theres 9 left.

And then there grand children (I think?) Are in love, and the fight between the clan is about to be settled or what? I dunno, im so confused ~.~ Someone please explain xD

Yes, so far you've got most of it. They were on the verge of peace due to Genosuke and Oboro's engagement but a feud within the Tokugawa clan caused Ieasu to get Hatori Honzo to annul the no hostilities pact so that each clan could fight for one of his grandsons and determin the next shogun. This plunged the clans back into war without the knowing of Genosuke or Oboro...and thats about it so far. Hope I could help.

Highlights of this episode are
A deadly and extremely mobile arm-less and leg-less dude.
A nice way to kill and over kill a enemy already wounded

What else can be said to pimp this show besides
WATCH IT OR ELSE

Basilisk episode #4:
The Horned Owl ~ Demonic Abode, Night Rounds

And a spoiler, about the newest and still[PG] rated episode that could make some say WTF outloud, for the curious among us thanks to Razer TV schedule
The blind leading the faithful, Gennosuke and Udono feast with the Iga clan under the false pretense of coming peace. But friendly smiles hide fatal intentions, and the vengeful host seeks to further their lead in this mortally biased competition. Inspired by drunken lust and blinded by loyalty and trust, forgiveness will be the end of one Ninja's life.

Comments:

1. OH, Akeginu. Sexy woman = sexy ninjutsu (not really, but w/e. XD Her technique is still cool though.)
2. OH, Josuke. I can't believe he felt Akeginu up. & I can't believe he didn't kill Jingoro when he had the chance. Costed him his life(?), even.
3. OH, Gennosuke. Are you that big of an idiot? :P

Speaking of the scene with Oboro & Gennosuke that Josuke eavesdropped into, I think FUNi changed the translation of the dialogue a fair bit in that one, after watching the subbed version. I make this assumption not just on the subs, but the limited amount of Japanese I understand. =\

And they still showed the scene unedited today at 12:30 p.m

Basilisk is quite graphic and odd, but interesting! I am enjoying it. The animation is good, and the computer effects are blended in much better than in the other two new shows. Not that it's necessarily bad CG, but its just more obvious. Yeah, it is kinda funny seeing this show on in the middle of the day...
GASP! is fatty really dead?! Probably not; it seemed too easy. That slug guy is gross...

Why, thank you. :P

Yeah, it seemed too easy for Jingoro to kill Josuke. Although he has been scratched off of the list in the beginning, anything can happen in a series such as this.

This week's episode is:

Episode 5 - The Surprise Attack

& everybody in the scrolls has now been officially introduced. Koshiro reveals his ninja technique as well, which was kick-ass.

Also, I just wanted to make sure, but was it Gyobu that was in the wall when Tenzen & Co. infiltrated?

On another matter, was it just me, or:

- were the 20 scrolled ninja introduced too quickly?
- were some of the ninja killed way too early? Seriously, it doesn't matter too much if one dies quickly, but 4? I was beginning to like Jyubei, too.

Methinks that not as many as seem to be are actually dead. I mean you have 24 eps and 20 ninja, plus ep 1 killed 2 off so that leaves 18 ninja to die over the corse of 23 eps; every episode since than has killed off one (exept maybe 5, catching the 10:30 (mtn) so I havn't seen it yet) That leaves us with only 14 or 15 to kill off in the next 19 eps, so the must be SOMETHING up.

Well, considering the music videos shown on TV that are live and not animated, Basilisk unedited didnt come as that much of a surprise to me. Although, if they used the word Bitch in any of the 3 series, would that be edited? Since that IS edited on PG rated Music Videos, but was left in YTV's air of GSEED (althugh that was rated 14+) and they leave in Bastard on every anime too, which im pretty sure Much would edit in music videos if any songs have that word :S Im sure this show would never make it to YTV or AS, so thank god for Razer :P Im still not familiar with all of the names yet, but that butterfly girl, that guy who uses hair, and that big boobed girl are pretty cool heh :P And I think there all from the Iga clan :O

Yeah, I couldn't see YTV picking up Basilisk. Samurai 7 seemed liked a possibility though. I daresay even Trinity Blood as well. :p Since Razer seems to be catered more towards teens, I would think that the chances of airing it uncut would be higher.

Oh, and:

Butterfly girl with snake = Hotarubi
big-breasted girl with freaky blood technique (if she's from Iga like u said) = Akeginu

Of course, you wouldn't count on music videos that way for course language, because no matter how "harsh" or "clean" the words are, many music videos will still be edited...thanx to the FCC and CRTC, plus others.

However, there's also a difference comparing music videos and radio songs as they both played at a different kind of content, such as course language. For example, the song "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" by Panic! At the Disco, the music video version played these words uncut: "whore" and "goddamn" while the radio version did not. Even though, that's just one song, but still quite a significant difference here. Unfortunately, most of the other course language like "bitch" for example, still edited in both music video and radio.

Getting back to the subject, as far as I can tell on Basilisk's language content concern, it wasn't actually edited at all. Hell, while some of you guys slowly picked up the series from Razer, I actually heard the word "bitch" on the first episode uncut with a PG rating.

AnimeDudde wrote:

YTV definitely not, but AS hmmmm....maybe, if they can find a way without editing the blood or language content, or they could slapped this series with a TV-MA of course (you know, that could work out). Besides, according the Anime News Network site, the US debut of that series will be on the American IFC channel in the fall; and not our IFC channel.

Finally some more of the Kouga coming into play. For the last few episodes it was just a slaughterfest for them. Although a ton of their ninja were slaughtered on their own grounds not too long before the Iga got away which is kind of sad. Hopefully the playing field will be evened out with the Iga soon.

There's probably a whole lot more than that too... seeing as how the voice of Piccolo (in the FUNi dub, same company dubbing Basilisk), Chris Sabat, also did about half of the other characters in DBZ as well.

lol they use him way too much >.> He does like every trailer for FuNi too, and I really dont think his voice acting is anything special. I mean, its good (although he sucked as Vegeta IMO) but they need to have more variety. I noticed his voice in Trinity Blood and Samurai 7 too, but in Basilisk its almost annoying hearing his voice from so many people >.> And theres only so many voices he can do before they all start to sound the same.

Yup, Shogen said bitch in ep 1. Although I don't think he said that in the Japanese version though. =\

True. The Kouga better shape up.

Okoi's one of my favourite characters now. :) I am quite interested in Saemon as well; wonder what technique he's hiding under that composed look?
