Episode 108 - Le Petit Castor/Don Chuck Monogatari

You may assume that the most popular anime to air in Quebec in the 1980s was Captain Harlock or Candy Candy, but that's probably because those are shows you'd find interesting on the surface. If you want to look at what was actually popular with French-Canadian children, you should shift your attention to a surprisingly violent talking beaver cartoon that was actually a repurposed advertisement for a Japanese amusement park put out by the same studio that made Chargeman Ken. Le Petit Castor (known as Don Chuck Monogatari in Japan) was a Quebec dub made for a Quebec audience, and is fondly remembered despite having no English translation in existence. 1. Hi! I saw this podcast recommended on my Bluesky timeline. I love to hear stories about anime around the world and I was intrigued with this podcast because I'm from Chile and here Don Chuck Monogatari was not broadcasted but "Yama Nezumi Rokki Chuck", who was mentioned in this podcast that was localized in Canada as "Fables of the Green Forest", was very popular in my country in the eighties. It was dubbed in spanish using the ZIV International version. Both shows look veeeery similar, and now I learned why.

It's always kind of fascinating to hear about an anime that was popular just in one country outside Japan, like a "local phenomenon"... there's a lot of those stories in other countries.

So yeah, thanks for the podcast! it was interesting.
